The largest private pickleball facility in Gaston County is not a pickleball club. It is a member owned swim club in Gastonia that built eight dedicated courts and did something almost nobody else in this study does. It sells a pickleball only membership.
Prices are published and billed once a year: $150 for a single, $200 for a couple, $225 for a family, with a $25 joining fee for new members. Seniors pay less, $75 for a single and $125 for a couple. A single membership works out to about $13 a month, roughly $1.44 a session for a twice a week player, for eight dedicated courts.
That price sits inside a wider finding. In the six county study, country clubs, swim clubs, and racquet clubs hold all 23 of Durham's confirmed private courts and most of Gaston's 24. In Wake County they hold 37 of 87. The dedicated clubs are real, Pickleball Charlotte runs 61 courts across five locations, but the quiet supply is the old club layer that added courts without a press release.
Gardner Acres also passes the Discovered bar on its own terms: independent and member owned, rec accessible pricing, a creative and practical brand, and community roots in Gastonia. Coverage here is earned editorially, never paid for or promised, and no partnership exists with the club. If one ever did, it would be disclosed.
Why it matters: Gardner Acres is the model hiding inside this whole study. Sell the one thing players want, publish the price, and let people join for pickleball alone. A neighborhood swim club figured that out before most of the pickleball industry did.
